Expression. Identity. Heritage. Community.

This Spring, eyedrum curator, WILLIAM DOWNS, celebrates the immense talent of Atlanta’s Black, womxn artists in STARS AND FEELINGS. This group show will be on display Saturday, April 23rd through Sunday, June 19th. There will be an opening show event from 5:30pm to 9:00pm.

Downs explains, “I'm bringing together a group of Atlanta-based artists that have been creating within a five-mile radius of my life. The thing that ties these Black artists together is that they stay true to their passions and are constantly creating work and honing their studio and mural practices."

The six artists chosen to participate in the show share a focus on expressing their identities, whether it is through hair, heritage, or community. "Stars and Feelings is an experience where artists share their thoughts, dreams, anxieties, emotions, and compositions. These artists utilize mark-making and color, not only to channel their physical and mental gestures into their work but also to make you feel something,” says Downs.

Artists include Danae Antoine, Erica L. Chisolm, SOFAHOOD, Nneka Kai, Ash Mcnamara, and Jasmine Nicole Williams.

Danae Antoine “seeks to dissect and understand femininity in patriarchal structures” through her practice.

Erica L. Chisolm “uses acrylic paint, tissue paper, decorative paper, twine, and other elements to create textured portraits, to represent the beauty and imperfections of becoming”.

SOFAHOOD uses “loud colors and even louder subject matters” in her art to focus “on the complex feelings and ordinary moments of the unheard”.

Nneka Kai’s “practice is rooted in the exploration of personal and archival narratives through the material of hair”.

Ash McNamara is inspired by the “impact of pedestrian artwork” in Atlanta and “a sense of community movement”. Her work has recently been shown through her partnership with LivingWallsATL.

Jasmine Nicole Williams work “centers identity and personal politics where she explores her southern, black, and femme identities”.

William Downs is a recipient of the Nellie Mae Rowe Fellowship at Hambidge Creative Residency Program. He received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Atlanta College of Art in 1996 and has since been in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Most recently, he participated in Of Care and Destruction at Atlanta Contemporary. However, his work is displayed most prominently at The Sandler Hudson Gallery in Atlanta, GA.
