Rooted in the archetypal journey through the underworld, Into the Night Land invites viewers to confront the liminal—threshold realms where the unconscious reveals itself. Drawing inspiration from William Hope Hodgson’s 1912 novel The Night Land, as well as the philosophies of Carl Jung, Eugene Thacker, and Georges Bataille, Winnie navigates a terrain where history and myth, presence and absence, converge.

The exhibition features nine monumental oil paintings, each rendered in a limited palette of deep crimson and chromatic black. These atmospheric compositions act as psychic gateways—rites of passage through which the viewer encounters the uncanny, the sublime, and the self. Each canvas, measuring 66” x 78”, engages the body as well as the eye, compelling the viewer into a visceral, corporeal dialogue with the work.

Winnie extends this visual architecture into an enveloping sensorium:

  • A four-hour ambisonic sound installation, composed of field recordings, seismic instruments, and ancient resonators, creates a haunting sonic topography.

  • An olfactory scenography built around geosmin—the primordial scent of wet earth—grounds the viewer in the elemental, calling forth ancestral memory and evoking unseen forces that linger just beneath the surface.

Into the Night Land does not merely depict landscape; it conjures it. The Georgia woodlands and the storied Irish terrains that inform Winnie’s practice emerge here as haunted geographies—terrain steeped in ritual, layered with forgotten histories and sacred echoes. His work asks: What if the land remembers? What if its silence is not emptiness, but breath held in waiting?

Through influences ranging from Gothic Romanticism and Symbolist painting to dark ecology and alchemical psychology, Winnie weaves a cosmology where the natural world resists domestication and insists on its own agency. These are not landscapes of retreat but of confrontation—uncanny sanctuaries where shadows pulse, and silence speaks.

In a time defined by noise and disconnection, Into the Night Land offers a space of hushed intensity and poetic inquiry—a place to listen deeply, to feel the weight of memory, and to step beyond the veil into the mythic dark.
